After leaving France, Hannah and I continued our trip on the Eurail into Spain. Our first stop in Spain was Barcelona, and then we traveled on to Madrid, where we ended our trip and flew home.
In Barcelona, we enjoyed exploring some of the areas outside the busiest tourist sections. We’re not really the type to spend our entire day going through museums or waiting in long lines to check attractions off a list. We would rather wander through different neighborhoods, find interesting places to eat, stop for a cocktail, and see where the day takes us.
Some of our favorite time in Barcelona was spent simply tooling around the different streets. There always seemed to be another little restaurant, café, shop, or bar around the next corner. We enjoyed trying the food and cocktails and getting away from the most crowded areas whenever we could.
As in many of the European cities we visited, the older streets and sidewalks added a lot of character—but they were not always easy to navigate. Cobblestones can make pulling a large suitcase feel like a workout, and they could be especially challenging for someone using a wheelchair or pushing a stroller. It’s something worth keeping in mind when deciding where to stay and how much luggage to bring.
Barcelona was a fun stop with plenty to explore, but it wasn’t the end of our adventure. From there, we got back on the train and continued to Madrid for the final part of our trip before flying home.
